Eat Right if You Want Washboard Abs

Many people think if they already have a flat stomach and no extra weight, then diet doesn't matter any more to getting washboard abs. However, that just isn't true. In order to build muscle and have the energy you need for the intensive workouts you will be doing, you absolutely must follow a healthy, low fat diet. You may even have to cut calories for a while in order to get rid of that natural layer of fat across your belly. That's not all to be thinking about, though.

Not only do you need to get rid of the fat layer, you must also build the muscle up that gives the washboard abs effect – the rectus abdominus. This muscle is actually one muscle with two arms that go up the outer walls of the abdomen with bands of connective tissue between the two arms. This is the muscle that is visible when developed into washboard abs.

In order to build muscle, you need lots of protein. The body uses the protein to build new muscle strands. You'll need to look for protein sources that are also low in fat in order to keep your calorie intake reasonably low. One way that people often do this is to add a supplementary source of protein like whey powder from a health store.

Your body also needs energy to build muscle for those washboard abs and to give you the stamina needed for the workouts you'll need to do. Carbohydrates are what gives the body energy but not just any carbs will do. Simple carbs add a quick burst of energy but are burned too quickly and often contain a lot of empty calories. Choose complex carbs like whole grains that will not digest quickly and so provide sustained energy.
